Facts About Hypnotism
The facts about hypnotism are a far cry from the fiction of books or movies. Indeed, contrary to what you see in spy novels or on the big screen, very few hypnotized people cluck like chickens, sing opera, or rob banks while in a trance. But what's the real story on hypnosis?
Did You Know These Facts About Hypnotism?
1. Hypnosis can't make you do anything you don't want to. Hypnosis will alter your state of consciousness, but it won't change who you are or what you truly want. Even in a deep trance, you retain the essence of who you are. "Aha!" you say. "I've seen those hypnosis TV shows. What about all those chicken-cluckers and celebrity impersonators on stage?" Well, here's the odd truth. They WANT to cluck like chickens, and the stage hypnotist has probably selected them for stage-duty for that very reason. (Okay, so I'm not saying they have burning desire to imitate farm animals, but rather that they love to perform and the hypnosis "frees" them to indulge their wish.) Stage hypnotists have certain tricks of the trade to select their ictims, er, I mean stage-guests. And yup folks, they can spot these people a mile away -- those who are highly suggestable and want to perform, even if clucking is involved. 2. All Hypnosis is Self-Hypnosis. This relates to the fact that you can't be hypnotized against your will. See, for you to experience hypnosis, nothing is injected into you. It's all done with the power of your own minded, guided, of course, by a hypnotist. You must not only cooperate, but focus on their instructions and TRY to be hypnotized. Alas, even being hypnotized takes work. 3. You've Probably Already Experienced Hypnosis. In a nutshell, hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness. Have you ever set out on a walk, or in your vehicle, along a familiar route and suddenly find yourself at your destination, realizing that you seemed to have arrived by auto-pilot? Maybe, perhaps, you couldn't recall most of your journey or exactly how you made it? That's because your mind slipped into a sort of hypnotic trance. If you'd been faced with an emergency, you'd have snapped out of it. But while the route was smooth and familiar, viola, there's a good chance you were in a kind of trance. 4. During Basic Hypnotic Trances, The Person Being Hypnotized Remembers Everything. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, people in a hypnotic trance remember everything that happened during the session. Sometimes, they take this recollection ability as a sign that they weren't, in fact, hypnotized. But this isn't the case. I suspect this misconception is partly due to the fact there are a lot of myths and misconceptions when it comes to facts about hypnotism. We can probably thank the movies for that.
